According to the legal community on the 3rd, the Criminal Division 1 of the Chuncheon Trial Division of the Seoul High Court (Chief Judge Kim Hyeong-jin) sentenced Mr. A (27), who was indicted on charges of robbery and theft, to 3 years and 6 months in prison, the same as the original trial.
Mr. A stole 3,500 won worth of jelly and snacks from an unmanned store in Wonju, Gangwon-do at around 9:25 a.m. on February 16, and ran away when he was caught by the business owner, Mr. B (female, 32 years old ) .
Mr. A’s actions could have been limited to punishment for simple theft. However, he assaulted Mr. B, who chased after him, saying, “All you have to do is calculate it. If you keep doing this, I’ll report it to the police,” which escalated into a charge of robbery and causing injury. Mr. A was handed over to trial on charges of tearing off and damaging the stroller screen in which Mr. B’s child was riding, throwing stolen snacks at Ms. B, and strangling and assaulting her, causing injuries that required treatment for 20 days.
The day before, he also stole snacks worth 500 won and 1,700 won each from two other unmanned stores.
Wonju Branch of the Chuncheon District Court, who was in charge of the first trial, said, “If the crime was committed repeatedly and there were no witnesses around, there was a risk that it could lead to a greater casualty accident,” and added, “The investigative agency stated, ‘It was fun to strangle the victim.'” Considering this, it was judged that punishment was inevitable.”
Mr. A appealed, saying ‘the sentence is heavy’, but
