Kim Hyun-suk “Jamboree incident, rather show Korea’s crisis response capability” Controversy over remarks

Regarding the early withdrawal from the 25th World Scout Jamboree in Saemangeum in 2023, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Kim Hyun-sook said, “It is the time to show Korea’s crisis response capabilities to the world.”

On the 8th, at a briefing held at the Saemangeum Jamboree Press Center in Buan-gun먹튀검증, North Jeolla Province, Minister Kim was asked whether the early withdrawal of the Saemangeum Jamboree would adversely affect the Busan Expo, and he answered as follows.

Minister Kim said, “I think now is the time to show Korea’s capabilities to the world through crisis response, so (this incident) can rather show the country’s crisis management capabilities.”

At the same time, he added, “I think that (crisis response) will be well reflected in the Busan Expo, so it will not affect it.”

Some point out that the remarks made by the head of the department in charge of the event were inappropriate, while the Jamboree was practically crippled due to inadequate management, such as lack of heat wave measures and hygiene issues.

Regarding Minister Kim’s remarks, the Jamboree Organizing Committee explained, “This answer was given with the intention that the World Jamboree would not affect the holding of other international events.”

“Currently, the government and local governments are concentrating their efforts on crisis management. We will do our best to safely finish the World Jamboree so that there is no concern about other international events.”

Earlier, in a briefing on the 6th, Minister Kim also caused controversy by saying that he had been “reported as minor” in relation to the suspicion of sex crimes that occurred within the territory. Officials from the Jeonbuk Federation protested, saying, “The victim is in a hospital because of the considerable psychological shock. How can this be so minor?”

In response, Minister Kim explained the next day, “When I said ‘minor’, I did not mean ‘a sexual offense was minor’ at all, and because the police had defined it as a building invasion the day before, I received the report and said that it was reported as minor.”
